Chapter 16
âSheâs covered, even a satellite would have a hard time scoping her out,â Jack Talon confirmed, having spent the past few minutes covering the Bell 222 business helicopter with a sand-coloured military canvas.
âGood, take a seat,â Colonel Jacques Remus said, and turned back to face the entire DSV team as Talon sat with the others at the wooden kitchen table of the solitary residence on the outskirts of Habshan, over a hundred miles from the Burj Al Arab hotel.
The switch from speedboat to helicopter had been swift and uneventful, as had the trip to the sand-strewn suburbs of the small Dubaian village. No police or security forces had been encountered and apart from the surprise appearance of Gasparyan, the mission had exceeded all their hopes. Not only did they know what Iron Phoenix was, they now knew how to reach it. They also knew why it held such importance to Hans Bauer, and that small piece of information was golden. With Remus and the rest of the team back together, there was a renewed sense of hope and spirit that had taken a hit since the death of McCitrick, and as Munroe glanced around the table he found their very presence uplifting after what had otherwise been a difficult few days.
âThe mission was executed perfectly, but before we get to that I want to put to bed the elephant in the room,â Remus announced, his voice deep, scratchy and unyielding as it always was. âWe all respected John McCitrick and his loss is going to stain our memories for a long time to come. He was one of the best operators Iâve ever known, and I am proud to have called him a friend⦠but if he knew any one of you was wasting your time preoccupied with his loss then you now as well as I do heâd stick a firm boot in each of your assholes.â
The blunt assessment drew nods and acknowledging grunts from all of the team.
âWith so much at stake heâd be fucking offended, and to that end I want everyone to draw a line under it right now. Theyâll be time to grieve and weâll give him the send-off he deserves, but as of this moment I need everyoneâs head crisp and clear. Once weâve ripped apart the shit-stain on humanity that is Daedalus, then we can mourn. Until then, people, itâs time to pull down that house of cards. And its time Hans Bauer and his henchmen learnt what itâs like to live in fear.â
There were no complaints from the six teammates as Remus stood before them, his shoulders pulled back and his neck stiff and straight.
âThanks to Munroe weâve got a lead on their precious little vault and if it contains what they think it does it will be enough to expose them. Rats donât like the sunlight. We shine a spotlight on them and theyâll scarper like the rodents they are, and we will be the ones hunting them down.â
